The fort is located on the outskirts of the town of Letohrad, surrounded by countryside. It was probably built in the late 13th century, and in the 16th century the fort was converted to a Renaissance chateau. After the nobility moved out of Orlice in 1650 for Kyšperk Castle, the building was converted for farming use. In the late 20th century, a car repair workshop was added to the grounds, and the fort decayed for 40 years. In 2008, EYWAN s.r.o. purchased Orlice Stronghold and it began work to renovate the complete site. Once renovation work was complete in June 2012, a new tourist destination in East Bohemia was created, offering visitors not only tours of the renovated fort with its original Gothic and Renaissance cellars, weapon collection, functional historic printing shop and other exhibitions, but also a restaurant and accommodation (Tours A, C are open and tour B is being prepared). The historic building, featuring exceptionally well-preserved structural parts from the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist epochs, is a protected heritage site. The attractions include the intact cellar vaults dating from the time the fort was erected, and the newly discovered masonry of the original ground floor, indicating a larger originally four-room building. The preserved figurative sgraffito decorations in the exterior plaster of the Renaissance chateau tower confirm the uniqueness of this site among rural palaces in all of Bohemia. The current floor covers the original fort’s rampart built in the late 13th century, 2.1 m wide, and a medieval cellar has been discovered that had been hidden for 400 years. An archaeological survey found a lot of fragmented tiles dating from all the structural periods of the fort. The discovery of late 16th century murals has also been one unparalleled throughout East Bohemia over the last 60 years.
